About Lake City

Lake City is a one of a kind place to relax and unwind! It is a gateway to some of the most remote and beautiful countryside in America and you’ll often see deer roaming town. The city is located in the San Juan Mountains and is a National Historic District with over 200 buildings listed on the National Historic Register (many of which have historical markers you can visit). It’s one of the most preserved mining communities in the U.S. and located in Hinsdale County, the most remote county in the contiguous U.S!

Lake City is full of turn-of-the-century architecture and visitors can explore the Victorian charm of downtown with over 75 buildings from the late 1800s – including the oldest courthouse and church on the Western Slope of Colorado! There’s also a public library, museum, movie theater, soda shop, OHV/Jeep rental sites, fly fishing shops and several grocery stores with reasonable prices! The Visitor’s Center is just two blocks away and can also provide you with more information on area attractions. The town is an active town, with many activities and events for ever age and activity level scheduled throughout the summer! Popular events include plays, bingo, historic tours, ghost tours, cemetery tours, family outings, art shows, community hikes, foot races, and a wine festival – just to start with.

OHV’s are welcome on the streets of Lake City!

As of 2019, OHVs are allowed on Hinsdale County roads and all streets in Lake City EXCEPT Highway 149 (Gunnison Avenue). Please note that a new OHV Pilot Program was approved which allows OHVs to travel on Highway 149 from 2nd Street in Lake City south to reach County Road 30. Hinsdale County OHV regulations can be found here. A Colorado OHV Permit is also required and can be purchased online here or in town for $25.25 at The Sportsman or Dan’s Fly Shop.
